The Hingham Public Library has created several policies to ensure that our historical materials are appropriately preserved by the Library and properly used by the public. The Historical Collection Policies (PDF) have been created based upon current archival standards, and contain information on the following subjects:
Purpose and scope of the Historical Collection
Responsibilities involved in preserving, and making available, historical materials
Acquiring new items
Removing materials from the collection
How the public can access the collection
Services
The Hingham Public Library provides several services for patrons who wish to collect information from the historical collection. The Library’s reference staff members are available to help patrons with their research during normal Library business hours as staffing and time allow. It is recommended that patrons make an appointment in advance. The reference staff can also conduct a limited amount of research for patrons who cannot come to the Library. The staff members will then relate their findings to patrons as well as provide copies of materials. If you wish to conduct research yourself or ask a librarian to do it for you, please call the Reference Department at 781-741-1405, ext. 1404 or send an email.
Copies of Materials
It is possible for patrons and/or library staff members to make copies of materials for personal use as well as publication. In order to find out more please contact the Reference Department. The Library reserves the right to refuse reproduction/publication requests that violate copyright law.
