Teen Volunteering

Volunteering at the Hingham Public Library is a great way for students to earn community service hours while gaining valuable educational experience and supporting the day-to-day operations of the Library. Volunteering provides participants the opportunity to:

  • Learn about the services, organization and operation of public libraries
  • Develop general office and library skills
  • Contribute to the community
  • Have fun!

Ways to Volunteer

We offer three different volunteer opportunities for students in grades 6+:

  • Join Teen Advisory Board. TAB meets twice per month and helps to plan library programs, create displays, and more. Learn more about Teen Advisory Board.
  • Volunteer weekly throughout the school year and/or the summer. Help library staff with general office work, shelving, projects, and crafts in our Children's and Teen spaces.
  • Short-term Community Service opportunities are available in our Circulation Department, with a minimum commitment of six hours required. Help clean shelves, shelf read, and other projects.

How to Apply

To apply for community service or to volunteer weekly, download the application, CORI Form, and CORI Release Form for minors, fill them out, and return it to any service desk at the Library! (All those interested in volunteering at the Library must complete a Criminal Offense Record Investigation (CORI) form as required by the Town of Hingham, under the provisions of Massachusetts General Laws c.6 § 172).

All volunteer applicants must present an original form of valid identification (driver's license, passport, or school ID) when submitting the CORI form(s). For minor applicants, if no picture ID is available then other documentation such as an original or certified birth certificate may be presented along with the CORI form and signed CORI Release Form for Minors.

If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call. We'd be happy to talk more about our volunteer program and help you decide which opportunity is right for you!
