For Caroline, being a girl in Malawi is confusing, and she is constantly asked, “What kind of girl behaves this way?” With a thousand cultural ideas flooding into her head from American media, she struggles to fit into traditional African society. At 9 years old, she finds herself in a boarding school far from home, and must finally answer the question “What kind of girl are you?” This is a sweeping coming of age story about a girl tangling with gender restrictions, religious institutions, American cultural attitudes, and African traditions that seek to define who she can be. It is also a tale of how one girl’s story can become all of our stories. This event will be held on Zoom. To join us, please register online, and we will email you the link shortly before the program.
