  2. Paul Shaw on the work of W. A. Dwiggins and The Dwiggenses in Hingham

    June 1, 2019, 3:00 PM - 4:45 PM @ Whiton Room

William Addison Dwiggins (1880–1956) was a leading figure in American graphic design. His work spanned advertising, magazines, books, and type design. He was equally adept at illustration, decoration, and lettering. Born and educated in the Midwest, Dwiggins and his wife Mabel moved to Hingham in 1904. This talk will focus on their time in Hingham, WAD as a designer, and the two of them as citizens. It will include designs Dwiggins did for the town and his neighbors, his marionette theatre, a look at his home, and items related to Mabel's gardening and civic activities. There will also be an emphasis on Hingham as it changed during the years WAD lived in town. Paul Shaw is a designer, design historian, and teacher at Parsons School of Design and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He has been working on a biography of W.A. Dwiggins since 1980, and has given over 20 talks on various aspects of Dwiggins' life and career. He is also the author of The Definitive Dwiggins blog.
