  5. Evening With the Author: Valerie Lester presents Marvels: The Life of Clarence Bicknell

    September 12, 2018, 7:00 PM - 8:45 PM @ Whiton Room

Celebrate Valerie Lester's new biography on the captivating scientist and artist, Clarence Bicknell. Lester pored over hundreds of letters, watercolours, and designs, to gain remarkable insight into his constant search for perfection. A product of the late-Victorian Enlightenment, Clarence sought to understand and express our world creatively. A respected historical figure on both sides of the Riviera, this irrepressible former clergyman dedicated himself first to botany, then archaeology, then botanical art tinged with whimsy. Valerie's cousin Marcus Bicknell and his wife Susie will also present and discuss their delightful short film, "The Marvels of Clarence Bicknell."
Valerie Lester, an independent scholar, is descended from Bicknell’s grand-parents, and is the author of several books, including Phiz, The Man Who Drew Dickens, a biography of Dickens’ principal illustrator (Clarence Bicknell’s uncle and Valerie’s great-great-grandfather). Don't miss this wonderful event!
