  2. Hingham Chess Club: Beginner Lessons

    March 8, 2018, 4:00 PM - 4:45 PM @ Whiton Room

    In this 12-week cycle, Beginners will master chess basics, including how pieces move; maneuvering the board; applying chess terms such as castling; and the stages of play. A period of open play will follow every lesson from 4:45-5:15. All ages are welcome, but HCC recommends a minimum age of six years old, and the ability to work independently. All chess lessons at Hingham Public Library are free. To help offset the costs of funding the program, a suggested donation of $10 per lesson is gratefully accepted by Hingham Chess Club, yet not required. Through their partnership with the Hingham Public Library, HCC is also the recipient of a grant generously provided by the Harold and Avis Goldstein Trust.

  3. Hingham Chess Club: Intermediate Lessons

    March 8, 2018, 5:15 PM - 6:00 PM @ Whiton Room

    In this 12-week cycle, Intermediate students will focus on strategy and board development, and applying more advanced chess terminology. A period of open play will precede every lesson from 4:45-5:15. All ages are welcome, but HCC recommends a minimum age of six years old, and the ability to work independently.   4. Barrel House Z Presents the History of Beer

    March 8, 2018, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM @ Whiton Room

    Join us for a fascinating presentation on the history of beer and brewing with Russ Heissner from Barrel House Z Brewing in Weymouth. Learn about the first breweries, the history of beer in America, the role of yeast in brewing, and how the brewing process works. A tasting at the end of the presentation will teach participants how to taste and evaluate beer.

    Russ Heissner was the first head brewer at Harpoon in 1986. He opened Barrel House Z in 2016 and brews small-batch, barrel-aged beer that’s created collaboratively with an ever-changing roster of innovative brewers.

    Babies, Books & Play is a drop in program for babies, toddlers, and their families (3 and under). Participants will listen to a few short stories, learn some finger play rhymes, sing a few songs and then have free play time with the library's collection of toys.
