  1. Author Talk: Marla Miller on her book Betsy Ross and the Making of America

    Abigail Adams Historical Society (AAHS), stewards of the Abigail Adams Birthplace, and the Hingham Library commemorate Women's History Month by presenting a talk by historian Marla Miller on her book, Betsy Ross and the Making of America.

    Betsy Ross and the Making of America is the first comprehensively researched and elegantly written biography of one of America's most captivating figures of the Revolutionary War. Drawing on new sources Marla R. Miller thoroughly reconstructs the life behind the legend.

    A Professor of History and Director of the Public History Program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Marla Miller is a historian of women and work before industrialization. She is the author of the award-winning The Needle's Eye: Women and Work in the Age of Revolutionand the president-elect of the National Council on Public History.

    Time will be allowed for audience questions, and books will be available for purchase.

  1. Puppet Show with Puppeteer Patricia Boylan

    Hingham resident Patricia Boylan has been an active puppeteer for many years. She tells classic children's stories through the voices and gestures of her wonderful hand puppets. She uses a traditional puppet stage, lights and sound system. During the performance, she also helps the children understand this special art form and shows how they can themselves be puppeteers with simple materials available in their homes. Each 40 minute performance consists of three stories. Before the performance and between each story, Patricia also talks with the audience about puppetry, how to create and manipulate puppets, and use different voices. Suitable for preschool children through grade 3. Reservations are not needed. Please call the children's department at 781-741-1405, ext. 1403 if you need additional information.

  2. READ TO SALTY - a therapy dog

    Salty is the newest member of our Reading Therapy Dog team. He is a 13-year-old Chihuahua who is a gentle and patient listener and a certified therapy dog. Salty will be at the library on selected Saturdays. He will be available for 15 minute sessions on his “listening” days. *Please call the Children’s and Young Adult Department to register for your preferred sitting. Suitable for kids age 4 and up. SALTY’s listening dates for 2018 are: Feb. 03, Feb. 10, Mar. 10 and Mar. 31
