"Britain's War" - A Lecture Series with David Barrett: Part 4 - The Fall of Europe (Aug. 1939 - Jun. 1940)

Part 4 of this eight part lecture series covers Churchill's election as British Prime Minister and the German invasion of France, Holland and Belgium. It will cover the evacuation of Allied troops from Dunkirk and the formation of the “Home Guard” in Britain as the island nation prepared for invasion.

David Barrett was born in London, England just before WWII began in 1939. He and his mother endured the nightly bombing of the city during The Blitz before being evacuated to Coventry in the English Midlands. Shortly after, Coventry became the target of Nazi bombing raids forcing Barrett and his mother to return to London. His father served in the British Army during the war and David would go on to be conscripted into the RAF at age 19.

"Britain's War" - A Lecture Series with David Barrett: Part 5 - The Battle of Britain and the Blitz (July 1949 – Sep. 1940)

Part 5 of this eight part lecture series covers Germany's planned “Operation Sea Lion” to invade Britain, British fighter airfields under attack from German bombers, and how the London Blitz decimated the capital. It covers the death of Neville Chamberlain and the expansion of Luftwaffe bombing campaigns in other cities.

The Women & Money series: How to Make Sense of Today’s Financial Markets

This is a monthly financial literacy program designed to educate women of any age about the financial matters that affect their lives. A Day in the Life of a 19th Century Whaler

Come join docents Nancy Gentile and Captain Michael Taylor from the New Bedford Whaling Museum as they deliver a presentation about the history of 19th century whaling in New England. Their talk covers a day in the life of a sailor on a whaling voyage, the details of the whaling industry in Nantucket, New Bedford, and the arctic, and stories of the "sister sailors" - wives at home during these long and dangerous voyages. The program also includes a harpoon and baleen demonstration.

Part 6 of this eight part lecture series covers submarine warfare in the Atlantic and an increasingly isolated Britain. It covers Italy's launch of a North African campaign against Egypt, the crucial capture of an Enigma machine, and the invasion of Greece and Crete.

Starring James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Thelma Ritter, and Raymond Burr, it's the story of L.B. Jefferies (James Stewart), a New York magazine photographer who is confined to his apartment after breaking his leg. The summer heat is sweltering, and he passes the time by watching his neighbors from his window. He also spends a lot of time flirting and debating his future with his girlfriend, Lisa (Grace Kelly), at least until something suspicious occurs in the apartment across the courtyard, and he begins to believe something sinister has taken place. This is truly one of the greatest films ever made, with exceptional cinematography, music, and one of Stewart's best performances. Don't miss this legendary film!

It will cover politics and entertainment in Britain, crime during the war, and the capturing of Heavy Water from Norway as well as the "Digging for Victory" campaign.

A Live Tour of the Chocolate Indigenous Territory of Costa Rica!

This unique, live, experience will take us to one of the most remote places in Costa Rica where we'll learn about the indigenous Bribri culture, their beliefs and their way of life, and they'll show us how chocolate is grown and prepared in the old fashion way from the very fruit to the cup.

The HPL Book Club is a friendly group of library patrons and bibliophiles which has been meeting regularly for over ten years. We average 15-20 members each meeting and are always happy to see new faces! View the 2023 Partial Solar Eclipse at the Library: Streaming live from NASA!

Join us as we celebrate the 2023 Annular Solar Eclipse! We will be streaming NASA's coverage of the eclipse. There will also be eclipse related activities and crafts as well as a display of coordinating library materials. This family friendly event is a drop-in, registration is not required.

Thanks to a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and a supplement to the NASA @ My Library Project, the Space Science Institute’s STAR Net team is providing solar viewing glasses to public libraries for distribution at their eclipse related program.

Teens in grades 6-12 are invited to join us monthly for Yarn Craft Club! This is a casual meet-up club for teens who would like to bring their crochet, knitting, or other yarn projects in to work on with other likeminded teens. There won't be any set project each week, as this is a meet-up, but there will be yarn available for teens to use if they need some. No registration required.
