Julie and Julia
Julie
& Julia is a drama
comedy film

Ephron . The film depicts events in the life of chef Julia
Child in the early years of her culinary career, contrasting

Harvard Beats Yale 29-29
Harvard
Stadium – November 23, 1968 .
With
Vietnam raging, Nixon in the White House, and issues from civil
rights to women's lib dividing the country, Harvard and Yale, both
teams undefeated for the first time since
1909, meet for the annual climax of the Ivy League football season.
On the blue-blooded Yale campus, gridiron fever has made local celebrities
out of a Yale team led by quarterback Brian Dowling, who hadn't
lost a game that he finished since the 7th grade, and who was the
role model for Doonesbury's “B.D.” At civil unrest scarred Harvard,
a melting pot team of working class players, antiwar activists,
and a decorated Vietnam vet set aside their differences for the
Big Game. Together, Yale and Harvard stage an unforgettable contest
that baffled even their own coaches.
Using
vintage game footage and bracingly honest contemporary interviews
with the players from both sides, including Harvard lineman and
future Oscar winner Tommy Lee Jones, Rafferty crafts an alternately
suspenseful, hilarious, and poignant portrait of American lives,
American sports, and American ideals both tested on the playing
field and transformed by turbulent times.

A discussion will follow, led by Rev. Ken Read-Brown, minister of
the Old Ship Church in Hingham and by Rachel Syzman, facilitator
of the course "White People Challenging Racism: Moving from
Talk to Action" at the Cambridge Adult Center for Education.
In “Traces
of the Trade” Producer/Director Katrina Browne tells the story of
her forefathers, the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history.
Given the myth that the South is solely responsible for slavery,
viewers will be surprised to learn that Browne's ancestors were
Northerners. The film follows Browne and nine fellow family members
on a remarkable journey which brings them face-to-face with the
history and legacy of New England 's hidden enterprise.
The issues
the descendants are confronted with dramatize questions that apply
to the nation as a whole: What, concretely, is the legacy of slavery—for
diverse whites, for diverse blacks, for diverse others? Who owes
who what for the sins of the fathers of this country? What history
do we inherit as individuals and as citizens? How does Northern
complicity change the equation? What would repair—spiritual and

THE
CATS OF MIRIKITANI
Shown
by permission of the Producer/Director Linda Hattendorf
"Make
art not war" is Jimmy Mirikitani's motto. The 80-year-old artist
was born in
Sacramento, California, raised in Hiroshima, Japan, traveled the
U.S. and even cooked for artist Jackson Pollock. But by 2001, Mirikitani
was homeless, living on the streets of New York City . As tourists
and shoppers hurried past, Mirikitani sat alone on a windy corner
in New York 's SoHo , drawing pictures of whimsical cats, bleak
internment camps and the angry red flames of the atomic bomb. When
local filmmaker Linda Hattendorf stopped to ask about his art, a
friendship—detailed in THE CATS OF MIRIKITANI —began
that changed both their lives.
In
sunshine, rain and snow, Hattendorf returned to document Mirikitani's
drawings, trying to decipher the stories behind them. The tales
spilled out in a jumble. Childhood picnics in Japan
,
lost citizenship, Pearl
Harbor ,
thousands of Americans imprisoned in WWII desert camps, a boy who
loved cats. As winter warmed to spring and summer, Hattendorf started
to piece together the puzzle of Mirikitani's past. One thing is
clear from his prolific sidewalk displays: he has survived terrible
traumas and is determined to make his history visible through his
art.
September
11, 2001
threw Mirikitani once again into a world at war and challenged Hattendorf
to move from the role of witness to advocate. During the chaos following
the collapse of the World
Trade
Center
,
she found herself unable to passively photograph this elderly man
coughing in the toxic smoke, and invited him into her small apartment.
In this uncharted landscape, the two unlikely roommates navigated
the maze of the social welfare system, sought out lost family members
and researched the artist's painful past, finding eerie parallels
to events unfolding around them in the present.
Blending
beauty and humor with tragedy and loss, THE CATS OF MIRIKITANI is
an intimate exploration of the lingering wounds of war and the healing
power of art.

Where Do the Children Play?
Elizabeth
Goodenough Ph.D, Film Consultant
Where
Do the Children Play? is a one-hour documentary for public
television that examines
how restrictive patterns of sprawl, congestion, and endless suburban
development across America are impacting children's mental and physical
health and development.
Using the adage that children represent 20 percent of the world's
population but 100 percent of its future, the film opens by examining
differences between growing up today, with all its inherent obstacles
and temptations, and childhood as it was lived 50 years ago.
To understand today's children more acutely, the film team first
visited Beaver Island where there are no McDonald's, Burger Kings,
Targets or Walmarts. There, children congregate by bike in the downtown
area to play. All 85 students in grades one to twelve attend the
only school on the island. Most use the computer as a tool for homework,
but not for communication. And while they miss a lot of what their
counterparts have on the mainland, Beaver Island children are keenly
aware of nature and its importance to their lives and their well-being.
Second, the film looked at suburbs today, which have the greatest
problems. Explosive growth patterns, massive highways, distant malls,
create an isolated environment lacking in sidewalks or places to
ride bikes, walk or play. Children tend to be driven indoors to
computers and television for recreation, and then driven to a mall
or a friend's house by parents. Suburban kids, those ironically
with the most opportunity in some areas, suffer the greatest health
and psychological problems.
Third, the film team visited the city, which produced the greatest
surprises as a place for children: for those not raised in crushing
poverty, it still works. And surprisingly well. Despite obstacles
and the media stereotypes, old neighborhoods function better than
many suburbs, with parks and schools and a sense of community in
which parents of different backgrounds often watch out for the safety
of children, as they did generations ago when these places were
built.
Finally, the film examines the impact of the media and stranger-danger
television stories. But it also looks at the role of parents themselves,
specifically to the over-programmed child of professionals who run
their child's life as if it were a business.
The making of the film began in 2001 with the work of Dr. Elizabeth
Goodenough on Secret Spaces of
Childhood ( University of Michigan Press , 2003), which
the producers developed into an idea for a film. Dr. Goodenough
is a scholar, author and activist in the emerging field of children's
studies. She has taught English literature at Harvard College ,
Claremont McKenna College and is currently at the University of
Michigan Residential College. She is the founding editor of the
Landscapes of Childhood series at Wayne State University
Press and has co-edited Infant Tongues: the Voice of the Child
in Literature; Under Fire: Childhood in the Shadow of War; and
Children's Literature and Violence. Other books include

as “The Game of Their Lives”
Directed
by David Anspaugh [ Hoosiers] English 101 minutes
In 1950,
most Americans had only a passing familiarity with the game of soccer,
even though it was the world's most popular sport, and few athletes
in the United States played the game with any particular degree
of expertise. However, when an invitation
was extended to the United States to participate in the World Cup
tournament in Brazil — the international soccer championship held
every four years — Bill Jeffrey was determined that America participate.
In less than two weeks, Jeffrey assembled a team comprised mostly
of players from St. Louis (where soccer had developed a small but
loyal following) and the East Coast (where the game gained a foothold
on college campuses), with immigrants from Haiti, Portugal, and
Scotland filling out the ranks. Against all odds, the Americans
not only made it to the World Cup games, but defeated the British
team (favored by many to win the championship) in the greatest upset
of the 1950 games. The Miracle Match is a sports drama
based on the remarkable true story of the 1950 United States team,
featuring John
Rhys-Davies as Bill Jeffrey, Wes
Bentley as team leader Walter Bahr, Gerard
Butler as goalie Frank Borghi , Jimmy
Jean-Louis as Joe Gaetiens , a dishwasher born in Haiti
who found his way onto the team, and Patrick

Following World War II, France attempted to replenish its weakened
workforce by recruiting men from North Africa. In the mid-1970s
the French government relaxed its immigration policy to allow the
families of Algerian men to join them. “Inch’ Allah
Dimanche” provides us with a deeply moving memoir of the sense
of isolation and vulnerability that the immigrant family experienced
upon arrival in France at the time when racial integration was virtually
non-existent.

Kennedy
At Dominquez High School in Compton, California, basketball is valued
above all else. The end of the year is marked by a traditional cycle
of proms, riots and graduation. And there hasn’t been a play
at the school in over twenty years. In an effort to make a change,
English teacher Catherine Borek attempts to mount a theatrical production
of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, the classic American play about
the small town of Grover’s Corner, New Hampshire. In the process
she takes her fledgling students on a journey of self-discovery.
With no budget and no stage, Ms. Borek chooses Our Town for its
universal and timeless themes of community, family, love and loss,
and life and death, with the hope that her students might see themselves
reflected in the roles they play.
