TITLE: Library Director
DEPARTMENT: Hingham Public Library
SALARY: $82,028 - $103,406
DUTIES/DESCRIPTION: The Hingham, Massachusetts, Public Library seeks a full-time permanent director. The Director oversees all aspects of library administration, operations and advocacy, staff leadership, physical plant operation, Town and Board of Trustees programs and initiatives, and development of collaborative relationships with the Town and the Old Colony Library Network.
Established by state law in 1872, the Hingham Public Library (www.hinghamlibrary.org), with approximately 13,000 card holders, is governed by a Board of Trustees. Funding is partly from the Town, partly by the initiatives of Trustees. The community (www.hingham-ma.gov) of about 23,000 is fifteen miles south of Boston and closely linked to it by history, economy, educational and cultural activities, the arts, and public transportation. We are a busy, modern library, with an average of a thousand visitors a day of all ages.
Last renovated in 2001, the Library has state-of-the-art digital offerings, extensive programs in film, music, art exhibitions, author events, lectures, short-term educational courses, and enrichment opportunities. Following the recent work of a Futures Library task force and a town wide survey of patron needs, the Board of Trustees is currently writing the 2016-2021 Long-Range Plan. We need an energetic, forward-looking Director to help us retain our role as a highly valued community resource.
Candidates for the position of Director should be:
- Conversant with and experienced in the fast-changing standards and practices of modern libraries, as well as committed to traditional collections and services;
- Experienced in developing and promoting artistic and educational programs;
- Competent in financial management, prudent spending, and the preparation of operating and capital budgets, as well as development;
- A person who enjoys serving patrons and working collaboratively with multiple Town departments and community organizations;
- A strong and considerate leader, with tact and good listening skills, of an excellent, unionized professional staff of thirty-six full and part-time employees, two management employees and more than a hundred volunteers.
QUALIFICATIONS: A candidate for this position must have a Masters in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited college or university on the date of appointment, eight (8) or more years of progressively responsible library experience, and three (3) or more years of supervisory experience in a library, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Certificate of Professional Librarianship issued by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners is required. Candidates must have strong skills in core MS Office programs (i.e., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Specific experience in library automation and electronic data retrieval systems is required; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities.
