In partnership with the Hingham Public Library, the Hingham Chess Club (HCC) is pleased to announce the upcoming 2018 winter/spring schedule. Advanced lessons will take place on Wednesdays, starting January 10th, and Beginner and Intermediate lessons will run on Thursdays, starting January 11th. Lessons are held in the Whiton Room and are open to everyone. The time-schedule is as follows:
•Beginner Lessons: Thursdays, Lessons from 4 – 4:45 pm & Open Play from 4:45 – 5:15 pm
•Intermediate Lessons: Thursdays, Open Play from 4:45 – 5:15 pm & Lessons from 5:15 - 6 pm
•Advanced Lessons: Wednesdays, Lessons from 4 - 5 pm & Open Play from 5 - 6 pm
HCC’s Chess Master Farzad Abdi teaches all lessons and is a nationally ranked chess player, having reached the level of National Chess Master. He is the past North East Champion and the 2017 runner-up in the Massachusetts Championship.
HCC lessons operate in a 12-week cycle and prior sign-up is not required. During the 12 weeks, participants in our beginner lessons will master chess basics, including how pieces move; maneuvering the board; applying chess terms such as castling; and the stages of play. Intermediate lessons focus on strategy; board development; and applying more advanced chess terminology.
Advanced lessons prepare our players at tournament level, and attending tournaments regularly is recommended, but not required. Open Play is an opportunity for all of our participants to practice their skills and expand their interest in chess.
All ages are welcome, but HCC recommends a minimum age of six years old, and the ability to work independently.
Chess lessons at Hingham Public Library are free. To help offset the costs of funding the program, a suggested donation of $10 per lesson is gratefully accepted by Hingham Chess Club, yet not required. Through their partnership with the Hingham Public Library, HCC is also generously sponsored by the Harold and Avis Goldstein Trust.
The HCC will be celebrating its one-year anniversary in February 2018! This is a major milestone for a grass-roots organization established by parent volunteers as a community-wide, educational resource for both children and adults. Since the start, the club has grown its membership exponentially and has increased its offerings, such as hosting a recent Simultaneous Chess exhibition, in which the HCC’s chess master played 20 players simultaneously! A second Simultaneous Chess Exhibition will be held at the library on Sunday, March 4th at 1pm.
