Beginner Chess: Virtual Program with Nolan DeMott, ages 7+

Wednesday, February 1, 2023

This class is for students new to chess. Participants will learn the basics of play during this eight-week series (January 4 - February 22) including how to set up the board, the rules of the game, understanding basic rule nuances, and the difference between checkmate and stalemate. Each week of the series builds on the skills learned during the previous weeks' lessons.

This event will be held on Zoom. Registration for this event has filled.

This program has been fully funded by the Hingham Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. We are grateful for their support!

Nolan DeMott is an experienced Chess player with over 12,000 games played on chess.com, having achieved a rating of 1900. Nolan started playing Chess at age 5 and started competing in tournaments soon after. In elementary school, he led his elementary school to a Top 4 finish at the Hurvitz Cup a regional team chess tournament, hosted by The Massachusetts Chess Association. While Nolan decided early on to not pursue playing the game at a more serious level, he's always found the time to play recreationally and teach those who are looking to improve their game.

If you need to borrow a chess board, please send us an email at hijuv@ocln.org, and we will place one on hold for you.
