Evening with the Author: Martha Reardon Bewick presents Tranquility Grove: The Great Abolitionist Picnic of 1844
Monday, March 25, 2019
Come to the library on Tuesday, February 12th at 7pm for an Evening with the Author featuring Martha Reardon Bewick and Tranquility Grove: The Great Abolitionist Picnic of 1844. This Hingham event drew up to 10,000 people and was the largest abolitionist picnic in history, marking the 10th anniversary of the end of slavery in the British West Indies.
For abolitionists, the emancipation of West Indian slaves was more important than the 4th of July. Newspapers described everything from the parade to the grounding of a steamship taking local delegates home. Frederick Douglass was there, and former President John Quincy Adams sent remarks. Martha also includes suggestions as to how the grove, itself, can be better maintained as a significant, historic site.
Martha Reardon Bewick, a long-time resident of Hingham, is a fellow of the MA Historical Society, among other accomplishments. Don't miss this fascinating event presented in partnership with Buttonwood Books & Toys.
