Afternoon with the Author: Sandy Macfarlane presents "Swirling Currents: Controversy, Compromise, and Dynamic Coastal Change"

Saturday, January 26, 2019

Whales closer to demise; sharks chasing seals chasing fish; turtles stranding; fisheries reeling; shellfish aquaculture expanding; Gulf of Maine heating rapidly and Gulf Stream slowing down - all in the context of dynamic coastal change. Sandy Macfarlane probes the stories behind the headlines in an engaging narrative of personal stories and scientific investigation that entertains as well as informs.

Sandy Macfarlane's curiosity about all things marine, begun in youth, continues to the present. Aided by forty years of hands-on experience in resource evaluation, policy and management and decades of recreational rowing in her 14-foot Cape Dory, she learned about the biological and physical world around her. In the process, she also gained insight into the social, political, and economic landscape of coastal communities. Swirling Currents is her third book.

Praise for Swirling Currents:
“In this ambitious, but very readable book, Sandy Macfarlane documents the challenges of coastal resource management.  Through a series of case studies, she tackles many of today’s critical topics including marine mammal protection, overfishing, climate change, aquaculture, and nutrient over-enrichment.  Taken as a whole, the book offers a wonderful perspective on the history of our many failures, and few notable successes, in managing ocean resources.”
-Anne Giblin, Senior Scientist at the Ecosystems Center Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
