Jane Kamensky - Art & Revolution: The Predicament of John Singleton Copley

Sunday, September 16, 2018

This talk, drawn from Kamensky's award-winning book A Revolution in Color, traces the life and work of painter John Singleton Copley through the war-torn Atlantic of the 1770s and 1780s. Seen through Copley's penetrating gaze, the American Revolution emerges at an intimate scale, full of fears as well as hopes, losses as well as gains.

Jane Kamensky is the Jonathan Trumbull Professor of American History and the Carl and Lily Pforzheimer Foundation Director of the Arthur and Elizabeth Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America, at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. She is a historian of the Atlantic world and the United States with particular interest in the histories of family, culture, and everyday life.
