Evening with the Author: Amy Bass and One Goal
Monday, June 25, 2018
In ONE GOAL: A Coach, a Team, and the Game That Brought a Divided Town Together, Amy Bass tells the timely and inspiring story of how the town of Lewiston, Maine and its newly arrived Somali immigrants came together to chase dreams of national glory.
Perhaps nowhere were racial tensions more apparent than on the high school soccer team, the Lewiston Blue Devils. As immigrant kids joined the team, they had to tackle language and cultural barriers while dealing with openly racist hostility. But the team, made up of longtime locals and Somali immigrants, honed their play to build a powerhouse with one goal: their first state soccer championship.
Amy Bass, a professor of history in New York, lived in Lewiston for four years as a student at Bates College. Her writing has appeared in Slate, Salon, and CNN Opinion, and her Olympics coverage for NBC earned her a 2012 Emmy.
